How to Talk to People with Money
Someone once said “money is the root of all evil.” That person is an idiot.
While you may not have any money, and I certainly don’t, it doesn’t mean you can’t engage with those who do. Here are some pointers for the next time you find yourself conversing with the upper-middle class.
-
Don’t ask them “what are you gonna do with all that?” - in reference to money.
-
Try to avoid saying “must be nice. I gotta work for a living” when they tell you about their day.
-
Roth IRA is not their friend named Ross, and no, they don’t have a lisp.
-
Don’t ask them how much they make a year. Forget being impolite, it will just make you sad.
-
Direct the conversation to subjects you know about -- sports, famous wrestlers, and fireworks.
-
Don’t show them pictures from your vacation but ask to see theirs.
-
Liquidating assets doesn’t mean they hid their money in ice cream and now it’s melting.
-
Lakes are different from oceans. Please don’t confuse the two.
-
Find commonality in pop culture. Talk about Stranger Things. Don’t tell them you knew the Key Grip and were this close to playing Vecna.
-
If they talk about their time abroad, they don’t mean Canada. Now is not the time to bring up the Hockey Hall of Fame.
-
Their work isn’t hiring, don’t ask.
Remember, people with money are just like you and me, except not really.
So if you find yourself discussing the price of Ethereum remember, that’s not the pump next to unleaded.
